Khushal Khan Khattak

Poeta, guerreiro e líder Pashtun. Guiou uma união dos  Pashtuns, encorajando uma revolta contra o Império Mongol, promovendo o nacionalismo através da poesia. É o primeiro a apresentar uma teoria de unificação Afegã dentro de uma cultura anarquista, sendo o poeta nacional do Afeganistão e pai da literatura Pashto. Passou a vida lutando contra o império Mongol e, em busca de restaurar a região enfrentou o imperador Aurangzeb, ganhou em vários eventos, sendo um renomado guerreiro. Além de importante figura histórica, suas opiniões e ideias guiaram um novo desenvolvimento intelectual e ideológico,

Of the Pathans that are famed in the land of Roh,

Now-a-days are the Mohmunds, the Bangash, and the Warrakzais, and the Afridis.

The dogs of the Muhmunds are better than the Bangash,

Though the Mohmunds themselves are a thousand times worse than the dogs.

The Warrakzais are the scavengers of the Afridis,

Though the Afridis, one and all, are but scanvengers themselves.

This is the truth of the best of the dwellers in the land of Pathans,

Of those worse than these who would say that they were men?

No good qualities are there in the Pathans than are now living:

All that were of any worth are imprisoned in the grave.

This indeed is apparent to all who know them.

He of whom the Moghuls say, "He is loyal to us",

God forbid the shame of such should be concealed!

Let the Pathans drive all thought of honour from their hearts:

For these are ensnared by the baits the Moghuls have put for them.

Pachtuns

A proeza marcial pachtun já era famosa no tempo de Alexandre, o Grande, e os pachtuns foram um dos poucos povos que conseguira conter o imperialismo britânico no século XIX, derrotando por duas vezes as forças expedicionárias enviadas da Índia. Sua participação foi essencial para combater a invasão do Afeganistão pela URSS, entre 1979 e 1989. Mais recentemente, formavam o principal grupo étnico dos talibãns, havendo atuado na ascensão e queda daquele movimento. Derrubado o regime talibã em finais de 2001, os pachtuns modernos têm se envolvido na reconstrução do Afeganistão e o presidente Hamid Karzai é um dos seus. Mas no Sul do Afeganistão, os talibãns têm reconquistado influência junto das tribos pachtuns. Estima-se a população total de pachtuns em mais de 40 milhões de pessoas.
